Brave the crisis with innovation and idealism: A Greek businessman shows the way
While studying law in Germany and England, Aris Kefalogiannis realized, that high-quality Greek agricultural products, mainly olive oil and olives, were virtually non-existent in the international markets. The ambitious young Greek wanted to change this and founded his company Gaea Products SA in 1995. Gaea specializes in extra-virgin olive oil, olives, dips, tapenade and organic products. The company philosophy is to sell only quality products without artificial additives. All products are carefully processed with the latest technology to meet the highest quality standards. Gaea refers the raw materials from various regions in Greece. This created a range of seven different olive oils – each different in taste, color and use.
Active for environment protection
The company plays a big role in environment protection. Together with the Swiss organization “myclimate” Gaea has analyzed its production processes in order to reduce CO2 emissions drastically. For the project, it was calculated which CO2 emissions arise from the production of olive oil, from the cultivation and transport of harvested olives, to the processing and bottling up to distribution to the trade. The emissions that arose at each stage were added to determine the total emission per liter of olive oil and take steps to reduce them. Through the cooperation with ” myclimate ” Gaea is now the first manufacturer in the world that is able to provide CO2 neutral , extra virgin olive oils. In addition, Gaea and “myclimate” promote international projects to reduce CO2 emissions in developing and emerging countries , such as the modernization of a hydropower plant in Sumatra or the generation of electricity from bio-mass in India.
Kritsa is one of the oldest olive groves in Greece, which counts to the best in the country due to the perfect climate and the careful processing. Olive growers of the Kritsa Cooperative place extremely high demands on the quality of the famous olive variety “Coroneiki”. The Kritsa Cooperative is the first and also the oldest joint venture of a private company (Gaea) and an agricultural Cooperative (Kritsa). The Gaea Kritsa Cooperative was the beginning of the formation of added value in the value chain. The idea was to offer consumers a high quality extra virgin olive oil at a good price-performance ratio. At the same time 50% of the added value will be passed on to the farmers in order to give them the opportunity to continue to produce at the highest quality level.
